Student Testimonials
"I believe that the SHPE National Conference is the best opportunity a college student can have to become successful. First, the amount of companies that are there, not just for the career fair, but also for workshops is huge. Second, a lot of students from all over the country go and you are able to make many friends that have the same interests as you. As a senior I can say that I wish I knew about this earlier. It is for sure a place where you learn so much, from professionals to students that come from all parts of the country. An amazing place to network with awesome people. I've gotten one interview on the spot and a scheduled phone interview. I've met great people and made a lot of connections. I can definitely say that this was one of the best experiences I've had in my college career. " ~Herton D. |
"This is my second national conference with SHPE and it was even better. At the conference there is always something new to learn, new people to meet, and new opportunities to look forward to.i had the opportunity to interview with good companies such as Cisco, Google, Accenture, and Microsoft etc. As I finish my last semester, going to the conference since last year up to now, it has brought me to a great career after graduation. I encourage everyone to go, it's great experience and worth it. You never know how it could change you life." ~ Jocelyn A. |
"I have always loved the SHPE Conference, and it was nice to see people from all across the country again. Had 3 Interviews and lots of NJIT pride going in the air and floor (literally LOL) with the successes of our chapter. My interviews were with Honeywell, Intel, and NAVSEA. For the future, it would be nice if students can register early so that they can be located nearby. Also, although a good chunk of the students were ready, I think some students were not as prepared as they could have been. Working on preparing the students for what is to come is key for them to be able to take full advantage of the opportunity. This mean preparing them to network (in practice), to interview (in practice), to have an awesome resume with all the right keywords (reviewing them) and uploading it to the SHPE Career Center EARLY!, to know how they should present themselves and their resume to recruiters, to talk to grad schools, and to present themselves so they can be part of the competitions, to apply to opportunities EARLY. That is what SHPE is there for, to push us all, to make sure that the whole familia is ready. SHPE is like the big mama and papa de todos los pollitos! Hope this helps for future conferences. Good job with planning outings, everyone had fun :). " ~Katherine D. |
"It was amazing! I wish I had personally prepared earlier for the conference, however, the companies were great and so were most of the workshops. Some of them had very vague descriptions and inaccurate labels that lead us to sit in on some pretty irrelevant material. Also, the opening night was kind of weird, but overall, I loved it! The conference had a great lineup of companies with great recruiters who went above and beyond to explain their programs and their opportunities |
"It was an absolute privilege to attend the conference. As a graduating senior, I appreciated having the opportunity to receive such valuable advice regarding professional development from industry leaders. Furthermore, the career fair was unbelievable in its size and the quality of companies that were present. It made NJIT’s career fairs look amateur. As a result of my time, I was able to interview with FCA, GM, and Caterpillar and I am currently awaiting their responses. Additionally, I would like to say that the people that I met at SHPE were exceptional in their courtesy and professional etiquette. I was able to learn so much from the students that I met during my time in Seattle and I am glad to have created a new network with them. I must admit, that I do miss the SHPE National Conference now that it is over, but I am very satisfied that I was able to go at least once during my college career. If I had been aware of SHPE earlier on, I would have definitely wanted to go to all of the national conferences. Finally, I would like to thank NJIT SHPE for providing me with partial sponsorship – I appreciate being given this opportunity by making the cost of attendance less of a financial burden." ~David J. |
"I had previously experienced the SHPE National Conference in Baltimore last year so I was more aware of the various opportunities available at the event. However, the event surpassed my expectations. Set in Seattle, the SHPE National Conference provided even more opportunities and ways to be more engaged with the chapter. I attended the available luncheons, including Intel's SHPEtina Luncheon, which helped me connect with other girls in STEM fields, and the ExxonMobil's High Achievers Breakfast, which help me connect with ExxonMobil professionals. Both luncheons were great networking opportunities. Additionally, I enjoyed the workshops by Accenture and Texas Instruments. In the TI workshop, I won a programmable motherboard. Lastly, I was able to further connect with graduate schools, which I hope to visit in the upcoming weeks as I prepare myself from graduate school. " ~Olivia S. |
"It was my first time in a SHPE conference; and if I am to describe the experience in one word, I will say incredible. The workshops are a great opportunity to network with companies which can potentially consider you for an interview. That was the case of Exelon. I attended to one of their workshops and really bond with one of the speakers. On the career fair on Friday, He schedule me for an interview which I think it went super well. He told me I should be hearing from them just before Thanksgiving. Also, big companies offer Hospitality event. This is an opportunity where you can interact on a one to one basis with a company representative. This case it was Boeing's turn. I gave the representative a good impression and I ended up interviewing for Boeing. A good tip is to apply to the companies prior to getting to the conference. I did that for Boeing and got a second interview with them. Out of the two position I interviewed for, One of them I was not selected and the other one they send me an email staying that I am still consider but they have not make a decision yet. Bonding with companies representative is important. While at the carrier fair, I intercept the representative for Boeing and after chatting for a little while he refer me to companies I should apply to, and one of them was Northrop Grumman. I listen to recommendation and approach that company. Next thing I knew I was interviewing with them. I have not hear from them but the manager told me that they will be sending responses by thanksgiving, so I am still hoping to hear from them soon. SHPE national conference give the opportunity to students/member to possibly star a carrier on their dream company. I had a great time at the conference academically as well as socially. In conclusion, I will be in Kansas City next year." ~ Jefferson G. |
